Dating violence is a powerful, sensitive issue. You never know what struggles and memories will surface when you begin to have open conversations about it. We often found that kids were much more eager and open to having these conversations than the adults in their lives.
It’s inevitable that the discussions you start with kids about healthy relationships will seep into the conversations with the adults who teach, care for and coach them. We had some moving incidents in which parents who came to our events to see their kids speak or teachers who taught our curriculum ended up having very profound realizations about their own relationships. Similarly, we had kids unexpectedly open up about very painful and personal experiences. If you’re going to start these conversations, it’s important that you make the right resources available to heal whatever wounds they might reveal or reopen. That’s true for both the kids and adults whose lives your work affects.
